๐Ÿ“ธ Artist in Residency at Alloway Creek Elementary School ๐ŸŽจ

Alloway Creek Elementary School is proud to continue its partnership with visiting artist and professional photographer Carla B. Long, through the Cultural Alliance of York, for a school-wide Artist-in-Residency focused on photography, visual literacy, and the Creative Process.

Thanks to the leadership of Beth Becker and the Thunderbolt Foundation, and the dedication of art teacher Jill Rakowciz and Principal Joel Moran, every student in grades Kโ€“5 participates in this experience at no cost to the district.

โœจ Students engage in a thoughtfully designed, vertically aligned photography program that builds year after year. By the end of 5th grade, students have completed 18 cumulative lessons, developing both technical skills and creative confidence.

๐Ÿ“ท Across all grade levels, students learn that photography is an art formโ€”exploring composition, point of view, filling the frame, the rule of thirds, and capturing meaningful โ€œjuicy details,โ€ while strengthening visual literacy and storytelling skills.

๐ŸŒ Grade-level highlights include:
โ€ข Grade 3: An interdisciplinary Art, ELA, and History project exploring immigration and personal identity through photography and poetry
โ€ข Grade 4: A Mixed Media Photography Bootcamp transforming everyday images into imaginative creations
โ€ข Grade 5: Expressive portrait photography aligned with the districtโ€™s Core Essentials, focusing on emotional literacy and communication

This sustained residency nurtures creativity, communication, and critical thinkingโ€”empowering students to tell their stories through images and preparing them to enter middle school as confident visual storytellers.
