Littlestown Area School District

Continuing Education

(during school closure)

LASD is committed to supporting student learning during this time. Learning Opportunities for students will be posted here for students in grades K-5 and through the Schoology platform for students in grades 6-12. Students are encouraged to participate in the learning opportunities posted. The suggested activities will not take the place of the regular classroom instruction, but are meant to provide opportunities for students to engage in learning at home.

LASD Parents, Staff, and Students,

I hope all is well with you.  Around the country and in Littlestown, people want to know how schools will open in the fall.  No school district, including LASD, wants to develop any plans other than traditional face-to-face school.  From the LASD community survey of over 1000 parents responses in early June, 90% of you indicated you would send your child(ren) to school if we are in the green phase, and 75% would do the same in the yellow phase.   In addition, 30% indicated they would consider an “opt out” of traditional school if available.  Thanks to all the students and parents that provided additional input via email over the past two weeks.  Our goal moving forward is to provide an equitable and safe public school option for all children.

Recently we received updated guidance from the Department of Health in Bucks County Pennsylvania, and PDE increasing support and methodologies for opening schools with more students in traditional face-to-face learning.   As of June 29, 2020, we developed a plan and timeline to phase in all K-12 students for face-to-face instruction by the end of the first marking period. Kindergarten through 9th grade will start school with daily face to face instruction and 10th through 12th grade will start with alternating face-to-face and remote days.

Regardless of our health and safety plans there will always be some level of risk.  It is critical that we balance the risks of COVID-19 in children, which appear to be minimal, with the harms associated with school closure impacting their physical and mental health. You will receive or have received a letter asking if your child(ren) need(s) an accommodation for next year due to serious health risks. The letter and form is attached for your convenience.  Please complete the form if this applies, so we can begin the process of developing an individual plan to suit your child’s needs. We will call you after you submit the form.  We are following the same process with our employees to determine if we will have all the staff needed to provide the full complement of curriculum and support services.

We will share our full health and safety plan presentation to the school board and public at the study session on July 13, 2020 followed by approval at the voting meeting on July 27, 2020. If you are still concerned after you hear about the health and safety plan we will offer two “opt out” learning options.  See attachment for more details.

The fluid nature of governmental guidance and the virus itself means that things may change quickly and we may be forced to adapt on short notice. We will let you know immediately if this happens.  Please be patient and flexible as we work to find common ground for all students and families. I have the utmost faith in our staff, administration, and school board as we have tackled substantial challenges and improvements over the past five years.  We will get through this as a community, and refocus our efforts on future enhancements, as we put COVID-19 in our rear view mirror in the coming year.

Sincerely,
Chris Bigger

Learning by Grade

Thank you for being patient and flexible as we embark upon distance learning with our students. During the week of April 14-17, we will start using Google Classroom as our learning platform.  This is a tool that allows students to access, complete, and receive feedback on assignments from their teacher. The platform is what we will use for the remainder of our distance learning.

In the midst of the unprecedented situation surrounding the coronavirus, children are struggling to make sense of what they are seeing and hearing.  The following resources can help families and your children in a variety of ways.

Students in grades 6-12 will access learning through the Schoology platform. Parents will access their childs' classes with a code provided by the teacher. Please contact the teacher directly for the code. In a very few cases, secondary teachers who do not utilize the Schoology platform have posted links below. Students are reminded to check their district-issued email account as well.
