High School Seminar Program

The gifted program at LASD for grades 9-12 consists of many different options.

Students have the opportunity, and are strongly encouraged, to take Advanced Placement courses that are provided at our high school in many different areas.

Students may also participate in a dual enrollment option that allows them to take college courses along with, or in place of, traditional high school courses.

Online course options through Blended Schools and other organizations are also available for students to explore.

In the gifted classroom, students have the option of completing an independent study. This course counts as an elective and can be on any topic the student wishes to explore. Students must get parent, teacher, and administration approval before beginning their study. Form many of the studies, we plan on taking advantage of the Open Courseware that many colleges provide. Links to many of those college courses can be found at left.

Many students opt to complete an independent study in the area of career exploration. For career exploration, the best situation is where the students compare two or more choices of careers. It is the goal of this program that the students are able to decide on a specific career path by the end of the course. The course is available as a semester or a whole year study.

Another popular choice for independent study is college prep. Students generate a list of potential colleges, research those colleges, and narrow their choices down to a top 3-5 list of colleges to which they will eventually apply. Students take virtual campus tours, look into the best options for high school courses to prepare them for their chosen major, and read articles and explore websites that will allow them to learn about the transition from high school to college.

A good Open Courseware program from Notre Dame - Making the Academic Adjustment to College - will be utilized in our college prep independent study.  The course is designed for incoming college freshmen and allows students to refocus their study and work habits from the high school to the college level. A link to this course is provided at left.
