Rationale for the Study of Technology
From the beginning of human history, people have adapted to the natural world through a process of inventing and innovating. We have developed technology and applied technological systems to cope with the natural world and to enhance our human capabilities. Much of the knowledge applied in technology comes through the discoveries and observations of science. Some of the tools applied include mathematics and all the devices humans have developed to help create things. The skills applied are the abilities to use tools of all kinds, and the mental abilities of imagination, ingenuity and problem solving. It is by problem solving and extending our human capabilities that we are able to meet our needs and desires. Technology is evident through the materials, devices, structures, information media and energy that are human produced.
Students must become technologically literate to be capable of making informed decisions based on real world experiences. Technology needs to first be explored at the elementary level through basic concepts and life experiences. This knowledge needs to be expanded on throughout the secondary school with more in depth problem solving activities. Technology education gives students the ability to apply the knowledge they have acquired from their core subject areas. The problem solving skills gained from an effective technology program will enable students to evaluate a situation, use prior and new information to perform a specific task, analyze the results and impacts, and make appropriate modifications when needed.
It is a technological world and students need to be better prepared for what is expected of them when they enter the workforce. All careers are technology based, no matter how small, large, simple or complex. Students need research based, hands-on activities to help make informed decisions about the benefits and risks of technology. Many leading organizations support the efforts of technology education. They realize the importance of creating a technologically literate person to help make them a more informed and productive citizen. Technology has been growing at an exponential rate and if our students want to keep up with this changing world these types of real world, hands-on experiences must first take place in the classroom setting. Technology will continue to change and expand, and with it so must the technology programs we put in place. Our students need to be prepared to continue and help make this world a better place by becoming a technologically literate and responsible citizen.
